"The Chairs" by Eugene Ionesco
Modern theatre
THEATRE OF THE NO, the first English-language theatre in Athens, presents “The Chairs” by Eugène Ionesco, one of the landmark works of the Theatre of the Absurd, directed by American director and playwright Yoel Wulfhart.
Written in 1952, the play follows an elderly couple preparing for the arrival of invisible guests, while an Orator is called upon to deliver the “great message” of life. As the empty chairs multiply, reality and imagination blur, revealing the human need for communication and acceptance. Through absurdity and black humour, Ionesco raises questions about loneliness, memory and the meaning of existence.
Each performance is followed by a discussion with the audience about the play and its themes.
Language: English with Greek subtitles.
