At the height of the Cold War, the Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann returns for the first time after the war to Germany, having spent years in self-exile in the United States. Together with his daughter, Erika Mann, an actress and writer, they embark on a demanding and deeply moving road trip in a black Buick, crossing a country still marked by devastation: from Frankfurt, under American influence, to Weimar, under Soviet control.
As father and daughter traverse a divided Germany, their journey becomes a confrontation with the past, political choices, family memory, and the moral burden of a country trying to look forward without truly reconciling with what came before.
