The narration takes place in Nagasaki in 1964. After the death of his father, the leader of a Yakuza gang, fourteen-year-old Kikuo becomes the protégé of a famous Kabuki theater actor. Together with Sunsuke, the actor's son, he decides to dedicate himself to this traditional theatrical art form.
The two young men evolve together from the school to the greatest theaters in Japan, experiencing glory, acclaim, scandals, brotherhood, and betrayals. Ultimately, one of them emerges as the greatest Kabuki actor.
