Valuska, a young postman in a Hungarian town, is dedicated to his musicologist uncle, a man who disputes Werckmeister's theory of musical harmony of Verkmaister, his and aunt who uses him as a messenger in her effort for a "clean" society. Valuska learns about the arrival of a circus and its peculiar attractions, the stuffed carcass of a giant whale and a mysterious man named "The Prince". Because of them, the whole town is upset and Valuska, obsessed with the world's harmony, sees its inhabitants drive themselves to absurdity and the burst of unjustified violence when the military attempts to impose order. The mob invades a hospital and plunders it, the children refuse to go to bed even when their father asks them to, who is also the chief of police.
